Wed. 9/8 Slippery Creek to Hong Kong

The water was way up this morning when I left RB at 7:30. At noon, it was still coming in! The water has cooled off, because all the water coming in and probably because of the rain we've been hoping for.

I headed up Slippery Creek and fished the sandy spots up inside at the northern most bend. I caught a small red on a 1/4 oz gold spoon during one of my first cast. Things were looking pretty good. I moved a few times working each sandy spot with the spoon and a couple freelined finger mullet, but only got a couple catfish. (Practice for the Titusville Tournament.)

I moved down to Shotgun and fished the edges there for a while and caught a couple more "practice" catfish. I had an east wind at 5 mph so I changed plans and drifted from Shotgun across the top of Hong Kong flats toward the islands. Several boats cut thru where I caught a 33" red last week, so I adjusted my drift to carry me between some different islands. It was a good choice. A nice red appeared beside the boat and I dropped anchor and started firing casts at the direction it had come from. BAM! Fish ON!!! A fat little 21" er came to the boat and was dropped into the livewell. All I had left for live bait was some small pinfish. I used scissors to trim the spiked fins and cut the tails off. I gradually made my way west and saw a couple dozen slot reds, but no more takers. (I know where I'm going Friday morning!)

Finally tally: 2 reds and 5 "practice" catfish.

On March 14, 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt signed an Executive Order creating Pelican Island as the country’s first national wildlife refuge. Roosevelt went on to establish an additional 54 national wildlife refuges during his two terms and set historic conservation values for America. These values have grown into a system, which today, consists of 552 National Wildlife Refuges on more than 95 million acres of America’s most important wildlife habitat.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is the principal federal agency responsible for conserving, protecting and enhancing fish, wildlife and plants and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people. The Service manages the 95-million-acre National Wildlife Refuge System, which encompasses 552 national wildlife refuges and over 3000 “mini-refuges” called Waterfowl Production Areas. It also operates 69 national fish hatcheries, 64 fishery resource offices and 78 ecological Services field stations. The agency enforces federal wildlife laws, administers the Endangered Species Act, manages migratory bird populations, restores nationally significant fisheries, conserves and restores wildlife habitat such as wetlands, and helps foreign governments with their conservation efforts. It also oversees the Federal Aid program that distributes hundreds of millions of dollars in excise taxes on fishing and hunting equipment to state fish and wildlife agencies.

Moving Forward

I figured I would share some of the good news with my fellow shrimpers. I would make the announcement on my own site but I am waiting for some more concrete results before I do.

My site, a sister recreational shrimping website on the West Coast, sells a product called the Ozello Shrimper - http://www.ozelloshrimper.com/ . Effective yesterday, I incorporated a company with the same name and became the CEO - "Ozello Shrimper, LLC."

I didn't do it for any old reason either. I did it so I could hire an engineer to redesign the primary product - the Ozello Shrimper. Sometime in December, if all goes well, I should have a fully functional prototype of the trap in my hands that can be delivered and assembled by our customers.

Up until this point, we have not been able to deliver any of our products. This should change that and lower the price of the product in the process.

If all goes well and some of the sporting goods distributors that I know step up to the plate as they said they would, you may see an Ozello Shrimper in your neck of the woods sometime in the near future!

Thought I would share some of the good news. Will let you know if / when it all comes together!

9/3/10 - Hong Kong Flats

I checked my phone this morning and had a cancellation, so instead of heading to Biolab, I put in at RB. I got some nice finger mullet near marker 7 and headed into the Hong Kong Flats area to fish the northern end of the flats. There was a beautiful blood red sunrise, and there was supposed to be a light wind from the west this morning, but it was very calm. The water is up a little so I pushpoled my way into 12" of water by some islands. There were so many big mullet that it was hard to tell what was a mullet and what might be a red. There was a huge swirl at one of my baits so I ran to the back of the boat and opened the bail. After a quick three count, I reeled tight and the fight was on! The drag was set a little light so I added pressure to the spool with my finger. It almost burnt my thumb during the first 100 yard run!! It stood on it's head, waving its tail at me several times. When I finally worked it to the boat, I could tell it was over slot, and when I laid it on the measure stick it was almost 33"... and FAT! It took almost 10 minutes to revive, but when it swam off, it was strong and healthy.

I tried several other areas and saw single reds in every spot, but nothing but a couple swirls and one bite that left vampire teeth marks in it (I'm pretty sure it was a trout). It was hot and calm when I headed in at 11 am.

Best time to fish

Most fishermen go by wind, moon phase, tide, etc. The best time to fish is before a hurricane or after a hurricane. You dont want the wind over 30-35 MPH. A wind like that will stirr the water chasing the bait away from shore. Example: PC Inshore Slam - Flounder, Mangos, Trout Right off the seawall.... awesome.

Louisiana Shrimp Report

Sorry for taking so long to post it on here but ended up hurting my back when we took the boat out of the water so was laid up for a day or so.

My son and I hit the water heading down the Bayou at day break, and arrived at our shrimping location with cast net and shrimp bait ready to go. When we arrived there must of been at least 7-8 gators in the spot and all of them were at least 6-7' long and one was at least 10' long. Once we started casting they kind of moved back out of the area. Although they munched on the crabs as they moved back.

We started casting and we only got about 1 lb of shrimp, then I started baiting the area with the shrimp bait. We waited the prescribed coonass wait of 1-2 beers, although I don't drink beer we waited about 30 minutes. Then we started casting again, we casted for about an hour and ended up with 3 lbs over the baited area.

So all total we had 4 lbs of shrimp or almost a gallon, in about 3 hours of time. The other 10-15 people around us had about 1/2lb -1 lb of shrimp in same amount of time. So I am convince the baiting works, now I just have to be there when there are MORE shrimp in the area.

We went home with our little bit of shrimp, SORE shoulders(from throwing the net) and dead TIRED. But we are convinced to go again and again.

We are only throwing 5' Nylon white nets and we realize now that we should of used 5-6' MONO nets, they are heavier but much much TOUGHER.

Can't go again for a couple of weeks but we will keep you posted.

Hey folks:

Wow, what an awesome day to gamble on hitting PC and wetting a line. Well, the seas have been miserable for feeeshing the last week, so I figured I would get some finger mullet and go down to PC to try a flounder hole of mine. It worked out good as I was visiting a friend (and new member to leenoga.com) Chuck at Handlers Bait and Tackle in PC... He passed on some intel to me that the flounder started moving in PC. Well that was yesterday. Today I was on the water with three poles workin' finger mullet back and forth. Low and behold bzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ 12" - 20 lbs Vanish flouro leader with a 2/0 kahle hook and my 10 lbs test ultra light I am on a monster. At first I think I am on a big piece of debris. Im not gaining on this thing. Its dragging but not pulling. Its heavy but its not the bottom. Its moving but not the way I want it. HOLY MOLEY!!!!! This 6 lbs on the dot [boga weight] fat, fat, doormat comes up to the seawall. I made friends with a spanish dude down the way from me and I hollar for help. Doooood can you please dip this fish for me. He obliges. Wow!!! Masssssive flounder at 6 lbs this is my personal biggest out of PC (Have caught 8+ at Sebastian).

Well guess what?!?!? KARMA actually works. That guy was on a massssssive fish not long after me. He was on a huggggggggggge black drum. He had no net. Well guess what folks... I busted a move and dipped his drum for him. It actually put a slight bow in my dip net this thing was so huge. I also saw 3 huggggge mutton snapper pulled up today (guessing 6-7 lbs a piece). Guess what they was using???? Clams and shrimp. Dag-nabbit. The day I dont got no clams and no shrimp. The ONE RARE DAY that I dont got clams. Oh well. God is good. Got my 'trip fish' in the box and the fishes' nose and tail are sticking out of the cooler. Good problem to have.

Well, as the sun began to set I nabbed 4 out of 6 mangos right near the structure. Of course the ones I lost were bigggggg but thats the way it goes. Im thinking of trying a shorter leader on those right up next to the braid on a line to line knot. So then I can use some muscle on my braid as I rub the pilings which is inevitable.

Well here is where the slam comes in. I head back to the dock to clean my fish. Wow.. there is splashing and hits and action going off. Grenade hits and strikes are busting... what can it be??!?!?! I just have to throw a couple lines in while Im cleaning my flounder and mangos. Guess what? bzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZ ZZZZZZZ right while I am in the middle of cleaning the flounder my ultralight goes off. I had a live pinfish (palm size) on a short leader and a sinker. This nice trout comes up I drop my knife and fight the buger. Man... this flounder makes those mangos look like finger mullet. Wow what a monster....

Completed my slam. Doormat flounder, limit minus 1 mangos and a nice, respectable trout. Awesome.

HAVE YOU EVER SEEN THE INSIDE OF A DOORMAT MOUTH??? LOOK AT THESE CHOPPERS......

Off My Antibiotics Finally!

After 14 weeks of IV antibiotics I'm pleased to report they are finished. the down side is the "infectious disease" DR told me not to come back-to seek a 2nd opinion-he said he had given me the strongest antibiotic he could and it didnt seem to help.

So I'm being referred to Shands ASAP!

At least my hemoglobin level has come up to 11-down from 14 before surgery-but up from 8 right after surgery.

I feel fine cept for the unrelenting lack of energy-b12 shot in the butt tomorrow should help-i'm looking forward to a fishing trip sometime in the next 3 weeks

Took Father-in-law Lousiana Fishign today

Well I had one day where my back felt decent so decided to take my father in law(Darrel) from California out fishing today. I took his son out on Memorial Day this year and he boated a 37" Redfish that weighed 18lbs. So Darrell said he did not care what we caught as long as he got a bigger fish. Now that is putting some pressure on me the guide. Especially when the fishing has really SUCKED the last few weeks. Any way we headed out this morning at 5:00am and got to the boat launch at 6:00. Waited around for about 15 minutes then launched.

We arrived at the fishing hole at 6:30am. At THIS POINT I realized I did NOT have my HAT, nor my Sunglasses and also left my fishing towels and camera and also left my TACKLEBOX at HOME and hour away!!!!!!!!!!!!! So we had 4 fishing poles between us fishing a ROCKY ROCKY area. I told Darrell we may only get 4 cast then we could be done if we lost our rigs right away.

Well after just KNOWING this day was gonna be a TERRIBLE day, as they usually are when you start off forgetting stuff. We actually milked those hooks till around 11:30 am and we were down to ONE (1) Hook left on one rod.

Between 6:30 am and 11:30 (5 hours for those of you that have trouble counting ) he boated 6 Black Drum and here is their sizes, 42"-42lbs, 30lbs, 28lbs,26 lbs, 22lbs,12lbs, this is not counting the 2 we lost at the boat that took the hooks with them .
In addition to that, he caught his FIRST Redfish that was small but came in at 21".

He is very happy with his results and he did get a bigger fish than his son did. We brought the Redfish and the 42lbs Drum and the 12lb Drum home with us for PROOF and pictures. My wife is not home right now but as soon as she gets back I will try to get the pics up for you on this thread.

I think we are going to a NEW spot on Friday to see what it holds and will post results when we get back.

I gotta tell ya though this fishing and shrimping is HARD WORK

Went back and got 'em !!!

Went back to NIRL late morning for 3 hours. Wading, casting spoons(the good ones). After losing the big one a couple days ago we had upgraded the flourocarbon leader to 30# attached to our 20# PowerPro. Small tout here and there mostly, casting with the wind, when I saw a monster roll 25' in front of Kathie. I told her but she hadn't seen it. I told her to cast long and straight ahead. (I honestly thought of snaking the shot from her, but you know). It hit on the retrieve. Battle Royale!

Now understand, tiny girl versus BIG fish. The rod tucked under her arm, straining to pull him back, and reeling after every long run. After quite a while, the runs became shorter but he found new strength each time he saw me and the net. Back and forth they went. I loosened her reel drag a half turn twice during the tug-o-war.

Finally I was able to get half of him in the net. He was huge!. We so badly wanted to drag the netted fish back to the shore and get a cellphone camera out of the car. But the fish was tired, Kathie was tired, and the shore looked so far away. We would have been crushed if he didn't survive. We laid the fishing pole along his body to get a mark then spent a few minutes reviving him until he could break from my grip and hurry off.
Soon after I caught a dinky little 24" Red in the same area and we decided to head home. Kathie is cooking our slot red as I type.

Oh!
The length noted on the rod came to 40" !

Sea Turtle Deaths from Shrimp Fishing to Get New Review After Notice to Sue Filed by Conservation Organization

http://scubadivergirls.com/conservation/?p=2391

A lawsuit threatened by the Sea Turtle Restoration Project (STRP) has brought action from the National Marine Fisheries Service to stop the killing of sea turtles across the Gulf of Mexico. Their Southeast Regional Office has announced it will reinitiate Section 7 consultation on shrimp trawling under the Endangered Species Act in both state and federal waters of the southeastern United States.

"Shrimp fishing continues to injure and kill thousands of sea turtles in the Gulf each year because many shrimpers refuse to utilize a simple piece of equipment called a Turtle Excluder Device that can allow turtles to escape their nets," said Carole Allen, Sea Turtle Restoration Project's Gulf of Mexico Director.

STRP filed a 60-day Intent to Sue Notice in July following reports of hundreds of dead sea turtles in Mississippi waters. Examinations of dead turtles showed few of them died from oil but instead from "forced submergence" in shrimp trawls. Others have been killed by sand dredging in Louisiana where the shrimping season reopened on August 16. Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs) are not required on shrimp trawls in their state waters threatening even more sea turtles. In addition, recent NOAA inspections of the east Texas shrimp fleet found problems with TED implementation.

Shrimp fishing is the major cause of human-induced sea turtle mortality according to scientists. Tens of thousands of sea turtles are caught each year in US waters in giant nets drug along the bottom resulting in serious injury and death.

Todd Steiner, Biologist and Executive Director of STRP, said today: "Shrimp fishing combined with the BP oil spill is a double whammy for sea turtles, especially the Kemp's ridley turtle, that pushes them ever more close to extinction. We expect the government's new biological opinion to issue hard caps on the number of turtles that can be caught in shrimp nets– and when that cap is reached, the fishing season must end to allow the species a chance to recover."

Herbed Bread Crumb Crusted Feeesh

Hey folks.

This is a fantastic dish you can bake in the oven while your busy doing your vegatables on the grille or sides on the stove. Easy process!!! Small ingredient list!!! Fantastic flavours combined with layers of textures make this a winner for basically any flaky white fish. The finished product is a crunchy, crispy outside and a flavourful warm juicy center inside. The juice left over in the pan is nice for dipping bread as well. This is my twist on a McCormick and Schmidt cookbook bread-crumb recipe. Here we go.

FISH:
1 cup panko bread crumbs
1 cup progresso italian bread crumbs
2 tlb. sp. Carrabas spice mix
http://www.cyber-kit...an_Dip_Mix.html (fresh parsely or your other fav fresh herb works here)
1/2 cup melted butter (you can substitute olive oil here for healthier choice)

Mix all ingredients together in bowl. Dip fish in seperate bowl with just olive oil. Then dip in bread crumb mixture. Place on pyrex/glass casserole dish. Bake at 375 degrees for 30-40 mins (this will depend on thickness of fish). Serve.

PICKLES:
5 Minute Pickles:
2 fresh whole cucumbers sliced
1 tbs. sp kosher salt
1 tbs. sp. sugar
1 cup white vinegar

Mixe all ingredients together. Heat in microwave for 20-30 seconds to help sugar and salt melt. Do not breath in this mixture its intoxicating. Wait till mixture cools. Poor in zip-lock baggy with the sliced cucumbers. Squish it around, put in fridge, they will be tasty in 5 mins or 5 hours. FANTASTIC TREAT!!!! QUICK AND EASY....

Fishing advice

I am cashing in some hotel points this weekend, and staying in Clearwter beach with Tammy and the boys, right near pier 60. Don't think I will bring the boat, but was wondering if anybody has any experience fishing the area. I don't really want to spend $8 to fish off the pier, so I probably will fish off of the beach. Any suggestions? (other than Bama telling me to make sure Tammy is there?)

Don't Buy Tsunami

I've had very bad experience with the Tsunami brand. Much of my Lagoon fishing is done with 1/4oz Weedless Gold Spoons. Usually with the Johnson Brand with great success. But to save half a buck or so each, I bought 3 Tsunami brand. They look the same but the welding/brazing is poor. The 1st had the weedless break off the eye catching a slot red. The second, the hook broke off the spoon fighting a slot red. Yes, lost the fish and pulled in the spoon sans hook! The third, the eye and weedless broke off while straightening the weedless before tying on.
I've gone back to Johnson and never a problem. In fact I bought 6 more on sale today. (Buy 2 -get 1 free at Sports Authority)
I'm sorry if it's in bad taste but I just had to vent and hope someone else benefits from my mistake.

I'll be throwing Exude RT Slug and Johnson spoons on the NIRL tomorrow!

8/26 Slippery morning

Glenda and I got to RB this morning and only 6 or 7 trailers in the lot. We launched and soon had a couple dozen finger mullet in the livewell. We headed east on Slippery, planning on fishing north end of the northern most bend, but two boats were already back in there. We fished the edge of Slippery where we found bunches of bait. I threw a top dog and was getting swirls and hits on every other cast! I brought a ladyfish to the boat that was snagged in the gut. It wasn't too serious so I let it go and soon hooked and even bigger one. It ended up throwing the hook, but I had a nice POP on the next cast and felt that great familiar head shaking of a trout. I got a nice 18"er next to the boat and it self-released.

We packed it in and headed to the east end of Shotgun. We were on the trolling motor and spotted a 4' Tarpon rolling in the middle of the channel. We fished the north and south banks without luck, and we were getting ready to move inside the clam lease when a boat came by and headed in there. So we left and headed south to Plantation Island. We saw some reds pushing water, but by now the sun had broken thru the clouds and the bite was off. We headed in at 10:30 am after a beautiful morning watching the spoonbills, ospreys and egrets feeding along the shoreline.

The sky was overcast this morning until about 9:30, then it was partly cloudy.
The water was higher at low tide this morning than it's been at high tide for the last couple months.
Barometer was 29.93 and rose to 29.97 while we were out.

TV Star dies today

Dear friends,
It is with the saddest heart that I pass on the following. Please join
me in remembering a great icon.

The Pillsbury Doughboy died yesterday of a yeast infection and
complications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.

Doughboy was buried in a lightly-greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities
turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry
Jack, the California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and
Cap'n Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours as long- time
friend, Aunt Jemima, delivered the eulogy, describing Doughboy as a man
who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in show
business, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not
considered a very "smart" cookie, wasting much of his dough on
half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times, he -- even
still, as a crusty old man -- was considered a roll model for millions.
Toward the end, it was thought he would rise again, but alas, he was no
tart.

Doughboy is survived by his wife, Play Dough; two children, John Dough
and Jane Dough; plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by
his elderly father, Pop Tart.

The funeral was held at 3:50 for about twenty minutes.

Fishing has been consistant in the NIRL. Today we caught a couple dozen trout with only two in the slot and a red that spit the hook. WIth a 15 knot wind or more I was casting towards the shore while wading when a bull red hit, running past me and headed east. He took half my line before breaking the 20# flourocarbon leader. I couldn't even slow him down. But as a consolation, Kathie caught this one for dinner. It was only 21" but had an extra pound of spots.

Cotton Disease Update

Capt. Leo Hiles (Ret.) called me today and asked me to pass on some information he recently picked up. Leo has never messed with me and with the other stuff he sent me I believe this is 100% on the up and up. A friend of his caught a shrimp and asked Leo to come take a look. Leo took his camera and sent me 8 pictures of this shrimp. When I look at it I can see the telltale cotton balls in the back.

Leo also sent me and article from the FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute and asked me to call the good doctor(PhD) and see if ISAA can do anything to help. Here's a link to the site: Shrimp Disease and there are pictures in the article. You will see that the problem is with pink shrimp and not brown shrimp.

Good things to take from the article are that we should dispose of the diseased shrimp on land and no one has died, or gotten sick to my knowledge, from eating shrimp with cotton disease.

Chris, I can follow up with Dr. Landsberg in St. Augustine unless you want an officer to do it. Leo also suggested that we contact Jordan Kahn, outdoor writer for the Daytona Beach Journal, with this information.

Gator hunting Lake Washington 8-28-10

Well it was another gorgeous night out on the water. Cassie, Corbin and my friend Paul Grimm joined me for a night of stalking alligators. Unfortunately we came home empty handed again!!! It wasn't for lack of effort on our end, we saw them.... lots of them.... stalk them and watched them go under and not show up again until we would start to stalk another one. I stalked this one gator for nearly an hour this was our gator of the night, this thing took us all over the lake, it would just stay out of casting reach, a couple of times we got close but I missed it with my snatch hook, eventually he disappeared along with my patients. I pulled the plug and ended the night early at 1am. So I didn't fill any tags in my hunt week, pretty bummed out about it too. Open season starts 9-12 and I will regroup and try again.
Ponce - 08.27.2010 - Crushhhhhed The Bottom Feeeshin...

Hey folks.

Got a chance to head out one last day before a week or more of sloppy sea conditions and tropical tidal surges. Steve and I had a chance to explore the Ponce area last weekend and really liked some bottom structure we found. Armed with some new knowledge of the area, and some g.p.s numbers for shallow reefs and wrecks we were off to hunt some fresh fish for our families. Our goal was to start off in 90' of water and work our way in. Then to hit some structure in 60' and some new spots we have numbers for in 40-50' of water. We couldnt have planned a better strategy this day.

Our first stop was a WW II war barge that was 100' long and like 50' wide. The bottom was lit up like a christmas tree on the bottom machine. Dixon dropped a live pinfish (first drop of the day) and it was on.... Amazing. First drop. bzzzzzzzzzzzzZZZ ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ.. instant hookup!!! Dixon fights the fish skillfully, after long powerful runs we all guess what it is. Its a bruiser. A nice 25lbs range Amberjack comes aboard. Im thinking... if this is a sign of things to come, we are in for a good day.

Im using chicken rigs with 3 hook setups and we are getting multiple hookups on ruby lips, seabass. Its awesome. Then low and behold Im on something different. Im using a 3 hook chicken rig with squid chunks on it. bzzzzzZZZZZZ Im pulling up a wet blanket off the bottom. Its a fat thick flounder. Wow. The bite is hit and miss hit and miss and we really want to anchor over one area. Problem is wrecks are notorious for munching on anchors. So guess what? My live bait rig snags the wreck. Guess what folks. We just invented the 'redneck anchor' I hammer down my drag 80 lbs powerpro, wrap a mooring line around my reel mount to secure the rod and drop that sucker in the rod holder. Yup!!! My rod holds as an anchor nicely over the structure.... hilarious..... We load the cooler with misc. panfish and lots of catch and release action.... Bite slows a little we need to move. We were noticing also the powerful effects of the thermo-cline. Fish were coming up out in 90' and were literally cold to the touch. Water must be cold down there.

We move to another spot. Steve is on a roll. Porgy after porgy. And these porgies are huggggge man. They are meaty. Mixed bag again drop after drop. Im telling the guys to save all the ruby lips for an upcoming BBQ for me. Normally they throw those back but I actually like the taste of them. They just take more time to clean then they do to catch but thats life right. So we are off to another spot. Amazing, amazing site. We see fins in the distance... holy crap its a ray... no wait....

..... what is it? its a group of rays? No its a group of cobia? No its a large active school of Spadefish. Huge, huge spadefish. I would estimate them at 8-9lbs and there was 100s of them. We think they were mating, but they would not bite a hook a line. We pitched a few things at them but to no avail. We land more bottom stuff. Toadfishes, Vermillion snappers, nice ones... variety of other fish. Time to check something else out... Off to a different spot, now its time to head shallower. We move into fish the warmer waters to see what could be down there. We are predicting running into some groupers in the warmer shallower water due to the thermocline.

We find a nice bunch of bottom and there is bait everywhere. We are about 2 miles from the shoreline and birds were diving, bait was getting busted and we found our needle in the haystack structure. Both Steve and Dixon are scrambling for sabiki rigs to get some of these pogies, cigar minnows, northern mackeral, etc. whatever they are. Im really curious, why would we need more bait? We had live mullet and pinfish in our livewell. Now I know folks. The bait thats getting busted is what the fish are looking for and moreso what the fish are looking for the fish that are looking for. More details on that to come.

Immediately Dixon is on again. bzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZ this is a nice fish, rod bent over......... Dixon pulls up a nice Queen Triggerfish. So beautiful, I have seen them diving but they are so beautiful face to face. We make a quick phone call to friend to check myFWC.com to learn if we can keep the fish or not. We are instructed that to legally take the fish we must keep it alive in one of our livewells. They must be landed alive. So off to the livewell he goes. Being caught so shallow he did not need to be vented or anything and lived very well in the livewell. So now guess what??? Cigar minnows and northern mackeral are coming in by the bushel. Steve and Dixon (God bless em) are in the motherload of bait stuff. Nice. Im a rookie using these cigar shaped baits and so reluctantly hook one on my live bait rig and drop em to the bottom. bzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZ matter of minutes another flounder comes up. This is my 4th for the day holy moley!!!!

We are having a blast, a storm is just starting to move in, we have a full cooler, fish are doing good, bite is good. What could go wrong right? OUCH!!!!!!!! DAMMIT, OH GOD OH NO... NO.... NO....." I hear Dixon scream out. What happened I ask him. I look over to see a sabiki hook firmly imbedded in his finger. Literally the barb is gone. Dissapeared. No barb. Oh man. He yells to me. "James your gonna have to push it thru for me." Well, Im embarrassed to admit this, but um.... I have done this before on myself. I had a Zara spook treble hook brand new out of the box snag into my hand on the first cast gone wrong. I operated on myself, by myself, without medicine, alcohol or anything. So Im a skilled hook barb puller-outer.... Sure I tell him. He says he is ready. After a good solid torque and a finisher torqe the hook is free and clear. Thank God Steve had wirecutters on board to snip the barb off. The hook was out. He was back to normal. Ready to fish again. So my new nickname is the 'Doctor'

Ok now the magic happens. We are tired, close to home and I drop another cigar minnow down one last cast. bzzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZ its on. This one is massive 'TINK!' LINE BUST.. Dam. Well this happens 3 times and enough is enough. I decide to tie a 12" leader directly to my 80 lbs braid. This fish is gonna get caught this time. Low and behold another drop bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz ZZZZZZZZZ wow amazing fight. Aggressive, wild, runs. Scary snapping motions. This is the fight of the day. Wow beautiful. Up comes this beautiful red snapper. Wow this is my personal record. This species that is nearly extinct, and we find a school of them 2 miles offshore. How can this be? Wow can we keep em Im wondering. Steve pulls out his FWC fishing regulations and we discover we are allowed to harvest Atlantic Red Snapper in STATE WATERS. Awesome. But wait. .....

bzzzzzzzzBBBBBBBZZZZZZZZZZZZZ the freeline goes off. What can it be. Bzzzzzz no way, its a brawler, amazing fights. Its another snapper. Can you belive we are catching Atlantic Red Snapper on freeline baits with no sinkers? We think due to the shallow water, deeper cold thermocline, and mass bait getting busted around the boat they are schooling in the shallows for a free meal. bzzzzzzzzzzZZZZZZ another Red Snapper freeline hookup. This one is undersize 19" and we throw him back to grow some more. Wow. What a day. Black seabass, porgies, pinfish, croakers, toadfish, vermillion snappers, red snappers, ruby lip snappers, triggerfish, on and on. Most action packed bottom fishing I have ever seen. And we all felt to proud and lucky to catch this extinct fish the Atlantic Red Snapper.

Steve put us on the fish time after time. Thanks Steve and Dixon for an amazing time and lifelong memories!!!

Gator hunting Lake Washington 8-27-10

Headed out late Friday evening for a family gator hunting trip. I took 2 kids Marissa and Mitchel. Mike Higgins made into town and was able to join us. We got on the water well before sundown, headed over to the Dam, the kids got to see an airboat go over the airboat shoot and a decent gator on the other side of the dam wall. We headed back out to the lake and started hunting just before official sundown, there was some rainy weather to the west of us but it never really came our way a little sprinkle here and there. Got to watch a huge swam of mayflies head our way, it looked like thick smoke but it wasn't, things sucked for a little while until they cleared out, if you turned on a light they would cover you at least they don't bite or sting

We finally started to come across a lot of gators but man these things are skittish. I ended up touching a few gators with my treble hook but no solid hook sets. They would bolt the moment the fishing line touched their backs. Mike did an excellent job trolling around and spot lighting. I wish we could have got a keeper tonight but it just wasn't in the cards for us. We can home skunked again!!!! Sorry Mike!!

I did manage to snatch a nice bull frog up for the kids and we ran down some baby gators for the kids to look at, they wanted to hold one but I told them it is against the law so we just watched them swim around. Beautiful night out wind was mild, rain was very little and the moon stayed hidin most of the night.

I'm taking Cassie and Corbin tonight so we shall see if I can get at least one tag filled before the end of this hunt week. TTYL, Chris

P.S. I hope Mike made it home safely!!

Launching a Boat!

Launching a boat

This was the guy's first boat and he was taking it to the lake, but he wasn't quite sure of the correct procedure for launching a boat off a ramp. However, he figured it couldn't be that difficult to do, so he stopped by his Union office for advice, and they just told him...

"Just don't let the trailer get too deep in the water when you're launching your boat, and you should be fine".

Well later on, he couldn't understand what they meant by that, as he just could barely get his trailer in the water!

Here's a picture worth a "thousand' words! Your gonna love this guy!!!

They walk among us, get married, have children and vote!

NOTE: The sticker on the rear window explains everything!!!
