i am appalled at the FCAT scores this year. Never in the years I had to deal with FCAT did the scores ever look this dismal. Proving once again how inefficient the education system is here in FL. This is from a former principal I worked for in 2005.

May 19th Surf Fishing Tournament

May 19th Surf Fishing Tournament

If you don't know how to surf fish, come to this event and learn how. You don't need a 12 foot surf rod, bring your regular 7 foot spinning or bait casting rod. You just need to cast into the trough just beyond where the waves break next to the shore.

A sand spike (a piece of 2" PVC pipe) to hold your rod and reel out of the sand, a bucket and a couple extra pre-rigged surf fishing rigs are good to bring, or learn how to tie your own in later posts.

And don't forget to bring the kids! There will be a separate Kids Tourney!

Where? Playlinda Beach, which is east of the Titusville Bridge. Parking Lot #9.
When? 7 am until 10:30 am, May 19th.
Cost? $10 for adults and Kids Tourney is FREE!
How to win? The longest Whiting wins!
Sidepot? The longest Pompano wins!

Sign up now so we can bring enough food for everyone!

Free to good home (labradoodle puppy)

I know a family that bought a Labradoodle puppy (for a 10 year old boy), the boy lost interest, and nobody wants to keep and train the puppy. They paid $650 for the puppy (the breeder wanted $800), and they just want it to go to a good home. It is in Lakeland, so a little drive to pick it up. If anybody is interested, let me know, and I will get more info for you. We have a standard poodle, and looked seriously at Labradoodles before we got our Cody. They are very good family dogs, and are a hypo-allergenic breed.

Shrimping 528 Seawall 5-12-12

In all my 20 years of shrimping from the seawall I have never witnessed a 5 gallon night. That is until last night. Man the shrimp had me dialed in. I had a couple of buddies that got there before sundown. I didn't make it out until 10pm so when I got there the spots were limited, in fact I only had enough room for 3 of my 4 traps. My first pull had nearly 40 shrimp and they only soaked 20 minutes, one trap had 30 in it. That trap produced 20+ shrimp every half hour for 2 about hours and then the line moved north to one of my other traps and that trap would get 30 in a half hour. When you pull a trap up you feel them popping around in the trap but when they are loaded up it feels a pack of Black Cat firecrackers exploding. I could not believe the luck of those traps, everyone asked me if I baited for them, I told them no and that I have never baited a trap and had success with it. My buddies left at 1am with 1 1/2 gallons and I finished up the night at 3am with 3 1/2 gallons or 341 shrimp. I had some really nice 8" jumbo's shrimp but this young girl new to shrimping dipped a 9"er I laid mine next to hers and it dwarfed mine, amazing the size of the shrimp we are catching right now. We also dipped about 6 dozen shrimp all night so the surface was getting action as well. Very few crabs, one squid about 5"'s. Lotsa wind so no bugs to speak of I do not mean to gloat but I'm so glad to see the shrimp return to my area, it has been a long time coming. I see myself and the kids getting some wall time this summer. Chris

5/14 EW Scouting trip

I left the EW ramp and saw my first tarpon roll this year. Summer fishing has started!

I checked out a bait pod not far from the ramp and caught an 18" bluefish which destroyed the hooks on my spook jr. I had picked up a X-rap topwater plug from the bargain bin at Gander Mt. last week, so I tried it. Fourth cast and something blasted it! This was no bluefish! You can only imagine my excitement when I saw that it was a Snook! Of course I didn't bring my camera today, so no pics of a very healthy 24"er...

I caught a half dozen trout to 20", but couldn't find a redfish to make an Inshore Slam, but a great morning anyway! Back at the dock by 9:30 am.

My son Jason had the day off and wanted to go fishing this morning. We headed to Scottsmore to launch but found the road to the ramp was closed at the RR Track for repairs to the crossing. Headed on south to Jones Rd in Mims and was able to launch fine. We went north almost to Turnbull Creek and started fishing with plugs around the schools of mullet. Boated 4 keeper trout 16, 18, 20 & 21 on plugs. All fish were released. Had a great time.

Dr Oz: Foods for Clogged Arteries

Dr Oz: Foods for Clogged Arteries

Looking for foods to turn back the hands of time? On today’s show, Doctor Oz showed you the healthy foods that can turn back the clock on your insides and add years to your life.

Dr Oz Foods to Unclog Arteries

Dr Oz gave a list of foods that are perfect if you have clogged arteries.

Jennifer, an audience member, told Dr Oz that she had a family history of heart disease. Her father has an enlarged heart and her grandmother was just diagnosed with heart disease. To keep healthy, she just joined a gym and plus, had her 4 kids to keep her on her toes. (Anyone with at least 1 kid know this to be true!) Jennifer told Dr Oz she also changed her diet and ate more green veggies. She also baked foods instead of frying them.

Dr Oz says your arteries are like a circular tube. These superfoods are so powerful, they can keep the tube from becoming clogged.

Cantaloupe & Kiwi for Clogged Arteries

Cantaloupe and Kiwi act to inhibit rust formation that happens in our blood vessels. (Oxidation) The more you eat, the more benefit you have. Eat 1 cup cantaloupe and 1 cup kiwifruit per day for maximum benefits.

Shrimp Unclogs Arteries

Dr Oz says that when you eat shrimp you may think it messes up the cholesterol in the body. This is a big fallacy. It’s not the amount of cholesterol you eat, it’s the amount of fat you eat that clogs the arteries. The cholesterol in shrimp is good because it functions as plastic wrap, so to speak. Instead of depositing itself in the arteries and clogging them up, it gives you a chemical that prevents the bad cholesterol from getting into your arteries. For best results, eat 5 medium shrimp 2x per week (grilled, not fried). Also, skip the cocktail sauce.
Red Skin Grapes & Cranberries for Clogged Arteries

Arteries may have fat in them. Red skin grapes and cranberries function as a strainer by taking fat out of the blood vessels and dumping it into cells. With exercise, the cells then burn it away. Eat 1cup of grapes per day 3 x per week or 3 glasses of cranberry juice per week.

C-Diver Mike needs our prayers

Mike has been in the hospital the past couple of days in great pain. Looks like a rushed surgery happening in the morning. I just got off the phone with him and he said he is ready to get this done. No surgeries are easy and there is always the uncertainty of being knocked out. It is a fairly common surgery which will be performed but they all have there risks. I hope and pray all goes well from over here in Deltona. Scott

Decided to return to my shrimping roots Friday night and took the kids out to do some shrimping with the traps on the seawall. We didn't get out til after 10:30pm and pulled our traps about every half an hour. We averaged about 30 shrimp a pull with 10 traps out. Finished up at 3am with 310 mixed shrimp small to jumbo's, mostly large. Several 7"+ shrimp. We had lights out but we only dipped about 6 the whole time. Beautiful night, I'm sure glad the SSE wind was blowin 10 cause the skitters and noseeums were thick at times, no wind would have been brutal. It was a fun night and we were rewarded with a bonus of shrimp to feed the family.
A mother and father took their 6 yr old to the Dr but were a little embarrassed on what was wrong with the child. Finally, after much hesitation, the dad pulled the boy's britches down and declared that they were concerned because of their boy's small penis. The Dr laughed and said, "Just feed him pancakes-that works every time!" The parents were dumbfounded at such a simple cure.

The next morning, the little boy came running down for breakfast. When he got to the table he saw a whole stack of pancakes! "Oh Boy! Pancakes for me?"

Shrimping Pineda Causeway 5-11-12

I have wanted to trap some shrimp all week long but wasn't able to get out, but I did manage a trip late last night. I knew that 528 was packed so I decided to try out Pineda Causeway. We got there at 10:30pm with only one guy on the wall, he had 4 traps, a generator w/ lights shining on the water, really nice guy named Russ.

The kids and I got to work setting out 11 traps. We put some on the north side, center and south side. My boys wanted to fish so we pulled traps at 11pm to see if we had any baitfish in the traps. We ended up with 3 baitfish and 8 Jumbo shrimp.

So while the boys fished. I just kicked back and talked with my new seawall neighbor. I like getting out and meeting different folks on the seawall, this kind of shrimping allows you more time to talk to people with the same interest. The next thing you know your shoulder to shoulder walking the wall helping pull each other traps and talking about past experiences, trap designs, etc... Russ did manage to dip a jumbo shrimp from time to time.

We pulled traps on the hour and our best combined pull was 12 and our best trap was 4 shrimp. The shrimp were not plentiful, what they lacked in quantity they more than made up for it in size, some of the biggest shrimp that I've seen in a while. We pulled the plug at 3am with our 38 Jumbo shrimp. Russ probably had twice that but he was there at sundown.

When we left I wanted to see what was happening at Mathers Bridge and the Eau Galle Causeway Bridge. So I took the long way home, actually more like, around my elbow to get to my rear end, but it was a scouting mission so it was worth it. To my surprise not many people out, I realize it is past 3am but when the shrimp run they show up in droves and stay all night. Sometimes folks don't even show up til the wee hours of the morning.

The weather was awesome, plenty of breeze no bugs to speak of. Great night out on the seawall. TTYL, Chris

Lagoon Fishin - No Catchin

Du and I hit the lagoon at abut first light and ran up to marker 29. The front had passed through earlier than I expected so we already had a cool north wind blowing at a good clip. We fished behind the islands there and managed two hookups with quick releases. Both fish didn't hit hard and maybe they just struck the Rapala because it irritated them. Don't know but Mullet were everywhere in there. After two drifts there we moved east into the islands in the pole and troll. Nothing, nada, zilch. Not many Mullet there. After we got back into the running lane the starter would not engage. I pulled the cowling, handed Dumont a big screwdriver, and he gave the shaft a boost as I hit the starter. The engine started and we figured it was time to call it a day.

The sky was blue, the day was great, but the fish weren't interested. Next time.

After 3 weeks of playing nurse with two sick women Dumont and I got out. We started north of Parrish Park before sunup and very quickly found a big school of Mullet. The Trout were there and aggressive. We caught 7 Trout with four over 20". The biggest was 23". We did have 4 hook up and get off after a good fight. By 9 they shut down and at 10 we got off the water. It was a nice morning with a good wind for drifting and the wind had picked up when we got off the water. Great day.
RRB Cinco de Mayo

I'll start by saying I got a strong gallon (almost exactly a gallon). A count of 225 mostly medium/large, very few small, and nearly a dozen between 6.5 and 7 inches. The largest was 7.25, but 4 others were 7 or more. I was there before dark and left the bridge around 12:30AM. Several boats (8-10) were on the NW side of the bridge with me.

Now, those of you that have ever hit Titusville know that the level of work between there and Oak Hill is fairly significant. At Oak Hill you, pretty much, put you net in the way of the shrimp. Yes, it takes some effort and skill, but the tide moves them pretty good. At Titusville, you're chasing the little buggers. They're coming from every direction, jump at the site of anything, and you're covering 3-4 lights and swinging long net socks over anchor ropes. It's quite the work out. I have a tall stool I put on the front deck of my boat, but, when the shrimp are moving, I'm rarely sitting down. It's effort, and a LOT of fun. So, I can attest, 225 shrimp for one guy at RRB takes some work. They were pretty consistent and I missed or saw (couldn't get too) more than I caught. If there were 1 or 2 more folks with me, we could have scared a 5-gallon limit. They were still out there when I left, but I was out of gas (me, not the boat, fortunately).

It was quite windy, the roughest "seas" I've been in shrimping. Settled down a bit around 10PM. They're out there folks, go get 'em!
Steve

P.S. Had two guys set up next to me, erect a tripod that stood nearly 8ft in the air and had two HUGE Q-Beams on them. When they moved they're boat once, it pointed those gazillion candle-power lights at me... I was reaching for the 50 SPF. Whew, that was bright.

Shrimping 528 Seawall 5-5-12

I haven't shrimped 2 nights in a row on the seawall and bag 3 solid gallons of shrimp in probably 8 years or more. I showed up around 5ish and claimed my spots on the wall for my traps. My buddy Nick showed up later to claim his 4 traps, this was his first time shrimping with traps. It was a great night to showcase this technique because the weather was great, huge moon, lots of shrimping action, great group of people with an affliction we like to call shrimping. We would pull our traps every half an hour or so. We gave up at 2am with 202 shrimp mixed size mostly med-large. I let Nick keep the catch. the wind ripped out of the south and at one point it tried to stop and the bugs got really bad, but deep woods off worked ok, then the wind started to change out of the west so the bugs didn't last long.

There was this young college kid fishing and in complete awe of the shrimp that we were catching, he lost a fishing pole earlier in the day, something pulled it in the water along with his folding chair, ha did manage to retrieve the chair but he sadly explained to me that he watched his pole shoot off through the water. Later on he snagged a big sting ray on a stray fishing line that was attached to his favorite fishing pole. So that was really cool to witness, made his day!

This weekend has really renewed my interest in shrimping from land. I ended up with 1 1/2 pounds of jumbo shrimp, 4 pounds of med/large shrimp and 1 pound of small shrimp that I bagged up for future catfishing trips. Plus a big bag of heads to use for Drum fishing. I will definitely get some more wall time this summer with my kids and friends. see you on the wall, Chris

Super Moon Sat Night

CNET) If you missed it last year, the super perigee moon is back for an encore performance.

On Saturday, the moon will be up to 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than the other full moons of 2012, according to NASA.

That's because it will reach perigee, its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, at 11:34 p.m. ET and become full just a minute later.

Super perigee moons happen about once a year on average, but the moon of March 19, 2011, was nearly 250 miles closer than this week's moon, prompting wild calamitous speculations.

When the moon is on the perigee side of its orbit, it's about 31,000 miles closer to Earth than the apogee side. The only effects expected are slightly higher tides and many beautiful photos.

The annual Eta Aquarid meteor shower, which is associated with Halley's comet, will coincide with the coming perigee moon. Its light will likely dim all but the brightest meteors.

It should be a gorgeous display if the weather cooperates. The moon will appear largest and most dazzling when it's near the horizon, as seen in this photo gallery showing last year's super moon.

Best viewing time for the meteor shower is between 9-2am then just before sunrise.

So get your tripod out, figure out the best lunar exposure, and snap away!

I dunno 'bout u but 528 seawall here I come!

Thursday & Friday

What a diffence one day makes! Thursday morning I headed out with Harry and his niece Dusty. She's on a school break between nursing classes. NOAA predicted south winds at 3 mph from the south first thing in the morning, increasing to 8 mph by 11 am. They were 1/2 right. It was a south wind, starting at 8 mph aand increased to 15 mph by 10 am. We tucked back behind an island and I was showing them how to throw and work a plastic jerkbait and I caught a trout! "This is going to be a GOOD day!" we all thought, well it went down hill from there. They caught several small trout before the porpoises moved in. The porpoises had us zero'ed in and we kept moving but they would follow us, so we left and tried several spots in Mulberry Cut without any hits. Next stop was Slippery Creek where a school of reds had been hanging out, key word: had. We tried out on a flat that has been producing both trout and reds, no bites. Last stop was the north east bank of Orange Island, no luck there either, but they both had a good time and were able to spent some time together before Dusty had to go back to school and get ready for her nursing tests.

Friday I saw my wife off to work at 6:30, by 7 am I was launching my boat at EW for a short couple hour scouting trip. The biting gnats ate me up while hooking up the boat, but they were gone when I hit the glassy conditions near 3 Sisters. I tried throwing a plastic jerkbait, then a jig tail, but what they wante was the Spook jr! I caught 5 trout then missed something big which threw the hook almost immediately. Then I caught a small red. I kept moving along the bank and cast to a spot that something big had rolled. Trout on! A big'un! I got it within 10 feet of the boqat and it threw the hook. Oh well, next time!
